If the amount of body fat is excessive in our body then it is known as obesity. It is a complex disease which can cause many other diseases and health problems like certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.
Obesity may be a result of inherited factors also and it may be difficult for some people to avoid it. Choice of personal diet and exercise may also cause it. To loose some weight, change in your diet, behavior and increased physical activity can help you. There are certain weight-loss procedures and medications available which can be a plus point in treating obesity.

Symptoms – 

If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or higher than that then you are considered as obese.

Calculation of BMI –

  • Weight (pounds) / [height (inches)]2 x 703


  • Weight (kilograms) / [height (meters)]2

Check the weight status for your BMI from the below table :-

BMI is not the direct measure of body fat as it is an estimate of body fat. So, muscular athletes who don’t have excess body fat may also have a BMI in obesity category.

Causes –

If your intake of calories is more than you burn through exercise or daily activities then obesity may occur.

1. Unhealthy Diet

A diet that is full of fast food and lacking in fruits and vegetables may lead to obesity. Beverages rich in high-calories and oversized portions are also unhealthy.

2. Liquid Calories

Alcohol which many people usually drink is full of calories. Sugared soft drinks and many other high-calorie beverages can also be one of the reason for obesity.

3. Inactivity

You can easily gain more calories if you have a sedentary lifestyle. The time you spend in front of computer, tablets and phone screens also contributes to weight gain.

4. Pregnancy 

It is difficult for some women’s to lose the weight that they gained during pregnancy. To loose the weight gained during this time, breast-feeding is the best else this weight gain may lead to obesity.

5. Lack of Sleep

There are hormonal changes that can affect your appetite if you are not able to get enough sleep or getting too much sleep. Consuming foods high in calories and carbohydrates can also lead to weight gain.
