The holiday season – aside from being the happiest time of the year – is also the cause of the extra calories. According to a report from the Huffington Post, winters increase appetite, due to increased melatonin. And, just another excuse to eat that extra piece of cake (or finish an entire one) is the holiday season. But, with the New Year, to keep NYE’s resolutions on track, we’ve mapped out some exercises that are the best for quickly shedding those extra pounds you’ve gained over the past few days.
6 best exercises to burn those extra holiday calories
1. Swimming
Swimming might not be the safest bet with coronavirus, but if you’re in a safe location and have access to a pool, start doing these laps. Tiring activity, swimming is the most recommended exercise to burn excess weight and stay toned. However, make sure you don’t participate in a pig party after a swim.
2. Yoga
More accessible at the moment, a good, engaging yoga session can help you lose weight at a sustained and rapid pace. Even if you only do 4-5 different asanas followed by a series of breathing exercises, you should be on your way to losing weight.

3. Running / jogging
A simple addition, running or jogging has probably been recommended to you by your peers as well. But, as common as it is, it’s also the best way to burn calories. Try downloading an app that might motivate you during the race to go the extra mile.
4. HIIT (interval training)
For those on a busy schedule in 2021, HIIT should be your exercise of choice. Quick 10-15 minute routines 2-3 times a day help keep the body in shape. Since it is high intensity, be sure to have a post workout snack or smoothie before returning to work.
5. Bodyweight training
Also known as free strength training, in these exercises you lift your own weight, rather than relying on dumbbells or kettlebells, making them twice as effective. Push-ups, free weight squats, mountaineers are a few examples.
6. Pilates
A few other exercises on this list might be more effective than Pilates, but for beginners this one is easy and perfect. And, if you plan to continue training throughout the year, this is also a simple routine. The biggest advantage? In addition to weight loss, it also improves balance, strength, flexibility, endurance, and general fitness.
