How Does It Work?

The body breaks down laetrile into three compounds:

  • Hydrogen Cyanide
  • Benzaldehyde and
  • Prunasin

The main compound responsible for its health benefits is Hydrogen Cyanide. It is also believed to be the main anti-cancer ingredient in laetrile.
This molecule was previously used to treat blood pressure because it can dilate blood vessels. It was later abandoned due to its toxic effects.
There are four possible theories on how cancer can be fought by laetrile, although these theories are not supported by scientific evidence.
Two theories claim that cancer cells are rich in enzymes that convert laetrile to cyanide. Since cyanide kills cells, it means that cancer cells can break down laetrile and kill cancer.
However, there is no evidence that cancer cells contain the enzymes that help convert laetrile to cyanide. The third theory suggests that cancer is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B17 (amygdalin).
There is no evidence that amygdalin is actually a vitamin. It is also not found naturally in the body, and your body cannot be deficient in amygdalin.
The latest theory suggests that hydrogen cyanide, which is made by breaking down laetrile, will make cancer cells more acidic and kill them.
But hydrogen cyanide does not differentiate and can also kill healthy cells as well as cancer cells.

Potential Benefits of Amygdalin


Some studies show that amygdalin, the natural form of laetrile, has other health benefits.

Here are some possible health benefits of amygdalin:

1) Regulation of hypertension: vitamin B17 can help regulate hypertension problems due to the formation of thiocyanate, which helps to lower high blood pressure.
2) boosts the immune system: Vitamin B17 is also known to work wonders for the immune system. Bangalore-based nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood hails the vitamin’s greatest benefit from being its potential to increase white blood cells, which improves immunity.
3) Great antioxidant: some experts also claim that the vitamin can combine with other powerful antioxidants like vitamin A, C and E to break down and eradicate toxic cells from our body, thus facilitating a natural detoxification process and promoting overall health.
4) Analgesic: vitamin B17 also acts as an effective analgesic. Several animal studies show that amygdalin can help relieve the pain caused by inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. However, there is a lack of human-based evidence in this area.

Can Laetrile Treat Cancer?


Laetrile was a popular alternative treatment for cancer during earlier 70s.
However, it is now banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in many states. Indeed, laetrile can cause serious side effects. Not to mention, there is no evidence to show that it can effectively treat cancer.
In addition, animals appeared to experience more side effects when they received both the enzyme and laetrile, rather than laetrile alone.
Currently, only two studies have examined the effects of laetrile on cancer in humans, but neither has compared it to a placebo treatment. Thus, it is not clear whether it is better to take laetrile than to receive no treatment.
Scientists have found that it has no significant effect on cancer. In fact, some people have experienced cyanide poisoning.
Scientists have discovered that laetrile has not helped treat cancer, as each individual’s cancer has continued to spread.
Some reports indicate that laetrile has helped treat cancer. However, these reports have also not been able to prove that only laetrile helped.
Finally, some studies in test tubes have shown that laetrile can reduce the frequency of tumors by suppressing the genes that help them to spread. However, there is no evidence that this same effect will occur in living human bodies.
Overall, the evidence shows that laetrile is ineffective in treating cancer. It is also very dangerous because it can be highly toxic and cause death.
