You know your vitamins and proteins. But really? A few of us know the nutrients our bodies need and their functions. But if we don’t understand the value of nutrients, we can never appreciate their need in our diet. Vitamin B17 is one of those nutrients that is often overlooked.
More commonly known as amygdalin, this anti-cancer vitamin is part of the family of vitamin B complexes. A well-known alternative remedy for cancer, vitamin b17 is effective enough to shrink tumors and stop metastasis. It eliminates cancer cells, protects the body from the appearance, development and spread of cancer in the future and gives a boost to your immune system.
Foods that contain this vitamin are called nitriloside. Before we find out which foods contain vitamin b17, let’s take a closer look at how beneficial this vitamin is for us.
How Does It Work?
The body breaks down laetrile into three compounds:
- Hydrogen Cyanide
- Benzaldehyde and
The main compound responsible for its health benefits is Hydrogen Cyanide. It is also believed to be the main anti-cancer ingredient in laetrile.
This molecule was previously used to treat blood pressure because it can dilate blood vessels. It was later abandoned due to its toxic effects.
There are four possible theories on how cancer can be fought by laetrile, although these theories are not supported by scientific evidence.
Two theories claim that cancer cells are rich in enzymes that convert laetrile to cyanide. Since cyanide kills cells, it means that cancer cells can break down laetrile and kill cancer.
However, there is no evidence that cancer cells contain the enzymes that help convert laetrile to cyanide. The third theory suggests that cancer is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B17 (amygdalin).
There is no evidence that amygdalin is actually a vitamin. It is also not found naturally in the body, and your body cannot be deficient in amygdalin.
The latest theory suggests that hydrogen cyanide, which is made by breaking down laetrile, will make cancer cells more acidic and kill them.
But hydrogen cyanide does not differentiate and can also kill healthy cells as well as cancer cells.
Potential Benefits of Amygdalin
Some studies show that amygdalin, the natural form of laetrile, has other health benefits.
Here are some possible health benefits of amygdalin:
1) Regulation of hypertension: vitamin B17 can help regulate hypertension problems due to the formation of thiocyanate, which helps to lower high blood pressure.
2) boosts the immune system: Vitamin B17 is also known to work wonders for the immune system. Bangalore-based nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood hails the vitamin’s greatest benefit from being its potential to increase white blood cells, which improves immunity.
3) Great antioxidant: some experts also claim that the vitamin can combine with other powerful antioxidants like vitamin A, C and E to break down and eradicate toxic cells from our body, thus facilitating a natural detoxification process and promoting overall health.
4) Analgesic: vitamin B17 also acts as an effective analgesic. Several animal studies show that amygdalin can help relieve the pain caused by inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. However, there is a lack of human-based evidence in this area.
5) It can lower blood pressure: in one study, amygdalin helped lower systolic blood pressure (upper value) by 28.5% and diastolic blood pressure (lower value) by 25%.
Side Effects of B-17
Some people may be sensitive to B-17, which causes side effects such as weakness or headaches. Drinking lemon, orange, grapefruit or grape juice usually alleviates these symptoms immediately. In addition, you can take hydrochloric acid to avoid a reaction.
Side effects of B-17
- Nausea and vomiting
- Bluish skin caused by oxygen starvation
- Liver damage
- Abnormally low blood pressure
- Falling upper eyelid (ptosis)
- Side effects are aggravated by:
- Take laetrile in pill form rather than an injection
- Eat raw almonds or crushed fruit stones while taking laetrile
- Take too much vitamin C while taking laetrile
You must include these natural sources of Vitamin B-17 in your diet
Apricot seeds top the list of food sources B 17. You can also have flax seeds; pumpkin seeds, millet seeds and buckwheat seeds to meet requirement B12 as these seeds also contain vitamin in moderate amounts. Flax seeds are loaded with omega fatty acids because of which they are known as vegetarian fish. They are a rich source of micronutrients, dietary fiber, manganese, and vitamin B1. Modern research has found evidence to suggest that seeds from flaxseed can also help reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
Nuts are rich sources of various nutrients, minerals, and proteins. Almonds, cashews contain vitamin B17. Almonds are rich in monounsaturated fats and healthy fats. Almonds can reduce LDL cholesterol by up to 15% for 7 grams of almonds per day. On the other hand, cashews are effective in lowering blood pressure, making your bones stronger and helping to lose weight. Plus, they keep you in good heart health and help keep you away from colon cancer.
Berries such as raspberries, strawberries, currants, cranberries, and blackberries contain very good amounts of this anti-cancer vitamin. Berries are considered special due to their high levels of photochemistry which help protect cells from damage.
Alfalfa, garbanzo and whole gram green sprouts are all loaded with B 17. Alfalfa sprouts are considered good for your kidneys. They also help prevent the development of kidney stones, which can be very painful.
The alfalfa and eucalyptus leaves contain large amounts of vitamin B17. The same goes for spinach leaves. The spinach leaves are loaded with antioxidants that help fight the onset of diseases like atherosclerosis, osteoporosis and high blood pressure.
Opt for assorted beans to get vitamin B17. Choose for fava, black, kidney, lima and garbanzo which are rich in this vitamin.
Discover your favorite yam, cassava and sweet potato. They all contain this vitamin, cassava being at the top of the list. Despite being a rich source of protein, cassava leaves must be cooked properly to avoid conversion of cyanogenic glucosides to cyanide.
Can Laetrile Treat Cancer?
Laetrile was a popular alternative treatment for cancer during earlier 70s.
However, it is now banned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in many states. Indeed, laetrile can cause serious side effects. Not to mention, there is no evidence to show that it can effectively treat cancer.
In addition, animals appeared to experience more side effects when they received both the enzyme and laetrile, rather than laetrile alone.
Currently, only two studies have examined the effects of laetrile on cancer in humans, but neither has compared it to a placebo treatment. Thus, it is not clear whether it is better to take laetrile than to receive no treatment.
Scientists have found that it has no significant effect on cancer. In fact, some people have experienced cyanide poisoning.
Scientists have discovered that laetrile has not helped treat cancer, as each individual’s cancer has continued to spread.
Some reports indicate that laetrile has helped treat cancer. However, these reports have also not been able to prove that only laetrile helped.
Finally, some studies in test tubes have shown that laetrile can reduce the frequency of tumors by suppressing the genes that help them to spread. However, there is no evidence that this same effect will occur in living human bodies.
Overall, the evidence shows that laetrile is ineffective in treating cancer. It is also very dangerous because it can be highly toxic and cause death.
